Culinary Excursions - August 4: Stone Acres Farm, JW Beef & Stonington Farms Shellfish

Join us this summer for day-long culinary field trips that explore the diversity of Connecticut’s local food system. Hosted by the Yellow Farmhouse, these excursions will take guests to farms and food businesses across the state for hands-on activities, tastings, and behind-the-scenes learning.
Lunch is included, featuring locally sourced ingredients that celebrate Connecticut’s growers and producers. Self-transport only to all excursions.
All excursion times will run from approximately 9AM - 2PM.
Stone Acres Farm & Stonington Farms Shellfish on Monday, August 4
Hosts: Yellow Farmhouse Education Center, Josh Welsh of JW Beef & Beth Simonds of Stonington Farms Shellfish
MORNING - Guided tour of Stone Acres Farm and Yellow Farmhouse Education Center, learn about their history. Explore pastures at JW Beef, learn how grass-fed beef is farmed.
AFTERNOON - Farm-inspired lunch, then carpool to Stonington Farms Shellfish to learn how to shuck oysters. Sample oysters with sauces, learn about oyster anatomy and their growth & lifecycle in the ocean.

Young Cooks & Farmers - Week 6: Noodle Fest
with Yellow Farmhouse Educators

Ages: 6 - 12
August 5th - 7th, 9:30am - 12:30pm, $50 per day
Our Young Cooks & Farmers program brings children ages 6 - 12 to Yellow Farmhouse Education Center to experience sustainable farming and seasonal cooking. Children work with farmers and culinary educators to investigate and explore a regenerative farm, grow and harvest produce, and prepare farm fresh recipes.
Week Six: Take a deep dive into the world of noodles like soba, rice, and wheat. Learn how to roll and shape, how to tell when a noodle is done cooking, and how to make delicious sauces with farm fresh produce. Each day will be a new set of recipes.

Growing Through The Seasons: Gardening Workshops

Yellow Farmhouse and Stone Acres farmers will help you create a blueprint for your beds, plan for produce throughout the growing season, manage weeds and pests sustainably, cultivate a bounty of tomatoes, build soil health, and put your garden to rest in the fall.
All experience levels are welcome!
$35 per workshop.

Young Cooks & Farmers - Week 7: Kitchen Chemistry
with Yellow Farmhouse Educators

Ages: 6 - 12
August 12th - 14th, 9:30am - 12:30pm, $50 per day
Our Young Cooks & Farmers program brings children ages 6 - 12 to Yellow Farmhouse Education Center to experience sustainable farming and seasonal cooking. Children work with farmers and culinary educators to investigate and explore a regenerative farm, grow and harvest produce, and prepare farm-fresh recipes.
Week Seven: Rise 'N Shine. What makes bread rise? How does temperature change consistency? What is fermentation? Explore these questions and more through cooking experiments and tastings. Each day will be a new set of recipes.

ACTIVITIES - Guided tour of kitchen space and an overview of their culinary programs and community connections. Explore their new garden and greenhouse.

Young Cooks & Farmers - Week 8: The Final Scoop
with Yellow Farmhouse Educators

Ages: 6 - 12
August 25th - 28th, 9:30am - 12:30pm, $50 per day
Our Young Cooks & Farmers program brings children ages 6 - 12 to Yellow Farmhouse Education Center to experience sustainable farming and seasonal cooking. Children work with farmers and culinary educators to investigate and explore a regenerative farm, grow and harvest produce, and prepare farm-fresh recipes.
Week Eight: The Final Scoop. Churn up flavor with homemade ice creams and sorbets. We’ll use late summer produce to make tried and true favorites like peach ice cream and raspberry sorbet, and experiment with new flavors like basil ice cream and sweet corn sorbet. Each day will be a new set of recipes.
