Young Cooks & Farmers - Week 2: Food Pockets

July 8th-10th, 9:30AM - 12:30PM, $50 per day

Our Young Cooks & Farmers program brings children ages 6 - 12 to Yellow Farmhouse Education Center to experience sustainable farming and seasonal cooking. Children work with farmers and culinary educators to investigate and explore a regenerative farm, grow and harvest produce, and prepare farm fresh recipes.

Week 2: Food Pockets. Every culture has a food pocket. Join us for a world tour with stops in the United States, Italy, Latin America, and China. Come learn about and participate in sustainable farming and learn to make ravioli, hand pies, dumplings, and empanadas. Each day includes a lunch prepared by the children. Each day will be a new set of recipes.

Storytime On The Farm

Ages: 3 - 6

Children and their caregivers join Yellow Farmhouse educators under the apple tree for a story, a nature activity, and a farm fresh snack.

Age: 3 - 6 years old. $15 per class.

Storytime will be held on Wednesdays, from 10AM - 11AM. 

Proceeds benefit the Yellow Farmhouse Education Center, whose goal is to connect people to where their food comes from and make a local, sustainable food system accessible to all.

Culinary Excursions - July 10: Samad Gardens Initiative & Auerfarm in Bloomfield

Join us this summer for day-long culinary field trips that explore the diversity of Connecticut’s local food system. Hosted by the Yellow Farmhouse, these excursions will take guests to farms and food businesses across the state for hands-on activities, tastings, and behind-the-scenes learning.

Lunch is included, featuring locally sourced ingredients that celebrate Connecticut’s growers and producers. Self-transport only to all excursions.

All excursion times will run from approximately 9AM - 2PM.

 

Samad Gardens Initiative & Auerfarm in Bloomfield on Thursday, July 10

Hosts: Sarah Rose and Azeem Kareem

MORNING - Guided tour of herb fields with an herbal tea demonstration. Learn growing methods, post-harvest processing & herbal tea production. Take home herb bundles or tea samples.

AFTERNOON - Collaborative, on-farm cooking experience using Auerfarm produce, followed by a walking tour of the community and kitchen garden, animal program and educational farm.

Week Three: Toss it Up. From coleslaw to fruit salad, salads can wow at every course of the meal. This week, we will harvest summer produce and get creative with seasonal salads. Each day will be a new set of recipes.

Week Four: Rise 'N Shine. This week we're learning to make everyone's favorite meal, breakfast! We'll make omelettes and egg sandwiches, fruit pancakes and compotes, yogurt and granola, and more of the sweet and savory breakfast foods that we all love. Each day will be a new set of recipes.

Field to Glass Summer Cocktail Class: Lavender Libations

Join us to walk in the lavender garden and learn about the culinary, medicinal and cosmetic uses of this versatile plant. Then gather in the Stone Acres formal garden with acclaimed mixologist Anthony Caporale and learn to craft lavender-infused cocktails with a selection of fine spirits provided by Spencer & Lynn Wine and Spirit Merchants.

Enjoy award-winning cheeses handmade by local cheese makers and canapes made with farm-fresh ingredients. Take home a lavender simple syrup and a charming nosegay. 

 

Thursday, July 24 from 4:30PM - 6PM at Stone Acres Farm

Proceeds from these programs benefit Yellow Farmhouse Education Center, a 501(c)(3) educational non-profit organization.

Hosts: Cato Corner Farm Staff and Murray Gates of Artza Mendi Farm

MORNING - Guided tour of pastures and farmland, sample cheeses and explore farmstand. Learn about dairy practices and cheesemaking process, and examine equipment.

AFTERNOON - Explore the chicken farm and learn about farmer & property history. Discover food waste strategies and poultry husbandry, and have a discussion about statewide farming business strategies.
